Jammie Sulivan, seorang putri dari seorang pendeta. Ia memiliki hati selembut sutra dan kepribadian yang amat baik. Ia sekolah di Beaufort, North Carolina. Kemanapun ia pergi, ia selalu membawa Alkitab di pelukan nya. Di sisi lain cerita ini, ada seorang lelaki, bernama Landon Carter. Ia seorang siswa yang nakal dan suka membuat masalah. Ia juga salah satu murid di sekolah yang suka mengejek Jammie karena kepribadian nya yang aneh itu, menurut kebanyakan murid di sekolah, membawa alkitab kemana-mana merupakan hal yang aneh. Suatu hari Carter terlibat masalah dan ia mendapatkan hukuman. Hukuman nya adalah ia harus mengikuti kelas drama di sekolah nya. Bagi kebanyakan siswa di sekolah, mengikuti kelas drama adalah hal yang amat membosankan, apalagi bagi siswa nakal seperti Carter. Nah, hal inilah yang membuat Jammie dan Carter menjadi dekat dan tanpa mereka sadari perasaan cinta mulai tumbuh di antara mereka. Jammie mengajarkan banyak hal pada Carter. Mulai dari pelajaran-pelajaran sekolah hingga mengajarkan Carter membaca Alkitab. Sedangkan Carter selalu berusaha menyenangkan Jammie dengan mengabulkan keinginan-keinginan Jammie. Salah satu keinginan Jammie adalah ia ingin berada di dua tempat yang berbeda pada waktu yang sama. Dan akhirnya Carter mendapatkan ide untuk mengabulkan keinginan tersebut. Carter mengajak Jammie ke jalan lalu ia membuat garis di jalan itu. Pada sisi yang kanan di beri nama suatu daerah, dan di sisi yang lain diberi nama daerah yang lain. Lalu Carter menyuruh Jammie untuk berbaring melintang di atas garis itu. Jammie sangat senang. Ia merasakan usaha Carter untuk menyenangkan hatinya. Suatu hari Carter datang ke rumah Jammie, lalu mereka ngobrol di teras. Jammie tidak pernah mengijinkan Carter masuk ke dalam rumah jika Ayah nya sedang tidak ada di rumah. Jammie takut para tetangga akan salah paham. Carter mengajak Jammie untuk pergi ke pesta tahunan sekolah. Awalnya Jammie menolak tapi akhinya ia menyetujuinya. Namun ada yang dikatakan oleh Jammie waktu itu. "Baik aku akan membantu mu, tapi ada satu syarat. Kau tidak boleh jatuh cinta pada ku". Carter hanya tertawa mendengar kata-kata itu padahal memang itulah yang akhirnya terjadi. Lama-kelamaan mereka semakin dekat dan Carter membuat Jammie tidak lagi diejek di sekolah. Semua berjalan baik-baik saja hingga suatu hari, munculah masalah. Jammie jatuh sakit dan tidak masuk sekolah berhari-hari. Carter mengajak teman-teman nya untuk menjenguk Jammie. Saat Carter datang, Jammie tampak senang sekali. Namun belum ada yang tau penyakit apa yang sebenarnya diderita Jammie. Hari demi hari keadaan Jammie semakin memburuk. Dan akhirnya terungkaplah kenyataan bahwa Jammie Sulivan mengidap penyakit yang sangat mematikan, yaitu leukimia. Hati Ayah nya sangat hancur mengetahui kenyataan tersebut. Ibu Jammie meninggal saat ia masih kecil, dan kini Jammie dalam keadaan yang amat memprihatinkan. Jammie sendiri sudah kehilangan semangat, namun Carter yang begitu mencintainya selalu menguatkan Jammie dan berkata bahwa masih ada harapan. Carter tottaly changed. Dari seorang siswa yang nakal menjadi murid yang begitu rajin, sopan, baik dan kini hari-hari nya ia habiskan untuk menghibur wanita yang ia cintai, yang telah merubah hidupnya. Ia selalu mencatat pelajaran dari sekolah dua kali, yang satu untuk nya yang satu lagi untuk Jammie. Lalu saat akhir pekan Carter selalu datang dan membacakan catatan-catatan tersebut untuk Jammie. Carter juga sering membacakan ayat-ayat injil untuk Jammie. Jammie semakin memburuk hingga akhirnya ia menyatakan sebuah permintaan terakhir. Ia ingin menikah sebelum ia meninggal. Ayah nya sangat sedih mendengar permintaan anaknya itu. Namun Jammie bersikeras ingin menikah sebelum ia meninggal, dan akhirnya Carter dengan berat hati memenuhi permintaan itu. Berat bukan karena ia tidak cinta, namun berat karena ia tahu, setelah menikah ia akan segera kehilangan mempelai wanita nya. Pernikahan pun dilangsungkan dan Jammie sangat bahagia. Kemudian setelah pemberkatan Jammie meminta Carter membawa nya ke pantai. Disana Jammie digendong oleh Carter dan berjalan di tepi pantai. mereka mengobrol banyak sekali. Carter hanya bisa menangis selama peristiwa itu namun ia menyembunyikan kesedihan nya itu dari Jammie. Mereka berjalan hingga akhirnya Carter menyadari bahwa Jammie telah tiada.
